Education Minister AniesBaswedan abolishes the 2013 School Curriculum
Cultural and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister AniesBaswedan will put pen to paper to pass a ministerial decree to abolish the 2013 school curriculum, a product of the previous ministry, later today.
“There’s a ministerial decree. I will hopefully sign it today,” Minister Anies said at the State Palace today, as quoted by Tempo.co.
Minister Anies said Indonesia is going back to the 2006 school curriculum starting in 2015. He said going back to the old curriculum should not be difficult because the 2013 curriculum has only been in effect for four months.
“We’re going back to the 2006 curriculum next semester. This is because we’ve had the new one (2013 curriculum) for four months. Don’t make it seem like we’ve had it for four years,” he said.
“[The change] is normal. What’s problematic is that the development process [of the 2013 curriculum] was not complete but it’s enforced in schools anyway.”
Parents all over the nation are delighted that the Education Ministry is abolishing the 2013 curriculum.
Dian Warastuti, whose child is in middle school, thought many teachers had not been trained to teach the new curriculum. She also felt that parents were kept out of the loop regarding what the 2013 curriculum actually offered.
“[We don’t know] how the new curriculum was meant to be implemented, because there was so much new content that required parents to teach their children at home,” Dian said, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Prasetyo, whose son is in elementary school in Jakarta, felt his son’s workload was too heavy under the 2013 curriculum.
“My son is quite a slow learner, I feel sorry for him if he has to learn a lot of new material at once,” Prasetyo said.
The 2013 curriculum is under evaluation by the current Education Ministry. It may be enforced some time in the future should the ministry succeed in training teachers to teach the new curriculum.
